Preaching To The Perverted sequel, first as graphic novel.
Preaching To The Perverted director Stuart Urban has finally embarked on a sequel to his 1997 cult movie set in the London fetish scene. He has drafted a storyline for the sequel, Tortured In The Orchard, that will be road-tested first in graphic novel form. And he is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to fund the novel’s publication
Urban (recently lauded for writing and producing ITV miniseries The Secret, starring James Nesbitt) and his 1997 cult film set in the London fetish scene have already proved what loyal fans can achieve through crowdfunding.
In 2013 P2TP became the first European movie to be restored and revived through a Kickstarter campaign, which resulted in a new high definition version being released.
And after the release of 50 Shade of Grey, Preaching To The Perverted was acclaimed by the Guardian newspaper in 2015 as one of the best ten films on BDSM/fetishism.
In a promotional video made for his new Kickstarter campaign page, Stuart explains that after wanting for many years to make a sequel to the original film, he finally found the way into a follow-up story.
The original story saw the film’s two main protagonists, dominatrix Tanya and devout Christian Peter, having a baby girl together.
So, wonders Urban, almost 20 years down the line, how does one imagine their daughter Artemis would have turned out as she reaches adulthood?
“What has happened in her upbringing, and what will be her interests and orientation as she steps out into the big wide world?” ponders the director.
“Beautiful and intelligent, Artemis is like a hybrid of Lady Gaga and Alice in Wonderland. She is going to enter the helterskelter, hypocrite-heavy world of Westminster and the seat of UK political power…”
Stuart has already written a draft storyline as the basis of the graphic novel and is working on visualisation concepts with longtime collaborator and P2TP storyboard veteran Mick Harrison, who also worked on the successful spin-off comic book from the original film.
The Tortured In The Orchard graphic novel will have 72 cinematic landscape format colour pages with several images on most pages/panels.
There are 22 available rewards that include a version of the book. These range from a digital download for a minimum pledge of £15, to an ‘all the bells and whistles’ Executive Producer package priced at £2,500 or more.
Ten of the 22 rewards can be yours for pledges of £100 or less. Full details of all rewards can be found on the Kickstarter campaign page (link below).
Stuart Urban points out that backers of the campaign, “will personally be playing their part and putting vital funds into the development of the movie” as well as getting their rewards.
“The graphic novel offers a chance to tell the story and perfect it before we set out to raise funds for the actual movie sequel,” he adds.
“The novel is just a first step: we would love for there to be extra finance raised for the actual movie’s eventual development, generated via stretch goals or surplus funds.
Fans of the original Preaching To The Perverted will be pleased to hear that original stars Guinevere Turner (Tanya) , Christen Anholt (Peter) and Julie Graham (Eugenie) are all up to reprise their characters, some two decades on down life’s journey. Ricky Tomlinson of Royle Family fame is also up to return as horrible hack Fibbin’ Gibbins.
As usual with Kickstarter campaigns, the Tortured In The Orchard graphic novel will only be funded if the target amount is achieved by the campaign deadline.
This means that if you pledge an amount towards the project, you only actually pay anything if the project goes ahead. So you either get the reward you’ve pledged for, or you pay nothing — a no-lose situation.
The goal for this campaign is £36,000. More than £9,000 has been raised at the time of writing, with 16 days left before the deadline of 5.24pm BST on Wednesday September 28.
