Janette Slack: Torture Garden DJ/ producer dies suddenly, aged 42
Janette Slack, the Torture Garden DJ who went on to find international fame not only as a DJ but also a label owner, producer and MixMag editor, has died suddenly in Hong Kong, aged 42 — writes Tony Mitchell.
Janette, who was born in Hong Kong, was a popular figure behind the TG decks in the early 2000s, where she specialised in spinning a mixture of prog house, tech-funk and breakbeat.
But between stints on the decks at these events, the latex-loving DJ could usually be seen out in the crowd having fun with a posse of rubbered-up girlie pals.
She performed at various other London clubs and in 2004 released her debut, In Session, on 12in vinyl, later setting up her own label, Slack Trax.
In 2015 she returned to Hong Kong, where as well as DJ-ing at numerous prestigious events, she set up her own music school where she taught music production.
Janette’s path and mine would regularly cross at those earlier TG events where she was
DJ-ing and I was photographing.
Encountered in the audience, she exuded a warmth and friendliness that easily cut through the loudest sound levels, and was always happy to chat and pose until she knew I’d got the pictures I was aiming for.
Missives that fizzed with personality
She began issuing email newsletters which always fizzed with personality, and were couched in language capable of making the recipient feel like the message had been created individually just for them.
She seemed very happy being back in Hong Kong with an international career under her belt, and I came to the conclusion we probably wouldn’t meet in the flesh in London again.
So imagine my surprise when I was at the pre-Christmas edition of Le Boutique Bazaar on December 1 2019, chatting to Resistance Gallery’s Garry Vanderhorne and his wife, artist Kat Toronto (aka Miss Meatface), when who should greet me but an effervescent Ms Slack.
You know what it’s like when you haven’t seen someone for ages, then you do see them, and it’s just like they’ve never been away? Well that’s what this felt like to me.
We had a good old natter, in which Janette revealed that she’d recently begun teaching in a very prestigious and exclusive set-up. We got some snaps, and I think this was the first time I’d ever photographed her or even seen her not in latex.
Now, sadly as it turns out, it was actually to be the last time I saw her at all.
She seemed happy then, and while I have picked up inferences in comments elsewhere that she was ‘troubled’ in some way, no details about the circumstances of her death had been disclosed at time of publication (despite at least one online story claiming otherwise).
Brother Trevor posts the news on FB
A short Facebook announcement by her brother Trevor Slack on Tuesday November 15 states that Janette died on November 13, and asks for privacy on behalf of her family. Some online reports which picked this up (see links below) have misreported the date of his announcement as the date of her death.
Forty-two is not an age at which people expect their loved ones to die. But perhaps there is some consolation for the family in knowing that Janette achieved more in the years she was with us than many manage in double that time, and was much loved.
I certainly hope she knew how much pleasure she brought to so many people both within and outside our scene, not only with her musical endeavours but also with her genuinely lovely personality.

Others who’ve recently left us: Master Keith and Kim West
Sadly Janette Slack was not the only significant fetish figure to die this autumn.
On September 15, the legendary/notorious Master Keith (aka Keith Wynn), veteran host of The Gate BDSM club nights, died in hospital from a combination of liver failure and sepsis.
On September 19 — just four days later — latex fashion pioneer Kim West (aka Kim Boome) succumbed to cancer aged 63.
Kim started out dressing people like Adam Ant in rubber in the mid-’80s and was known for technical innovation as well as design flair.
