Last minute Christmas gifts!
Last minute Christmas gifts for the fetish people in your life still on your ‘to do’ list? We’ve recently reviewed three new photo-books and a calendar that could make perfect stocking-fillers.
THE DARK CARNIVAL: PORTRAITS FROM THE ENDLESS NIGHT by Derek Ridgers
(Carpet Bombing Culture, hardcover £29.95)
This coffee-table volume collects together more than 200 favourite B&W images from four decades of underground culture watching at London clubs and gigs by photographer Derek Ridgers.
Starting with Punk in 1976, The Dark Carnival goes on to document the New Romantic movement and then the London fetish scene, from its origins at Skin Two in 1983 right up to the present day at clubs like Torture Garden.
Derek’s artful reportage style memorably captures the peacocks and exhibitionists of these different but connected subcultures.
And there’s fun to be had spotting the tribes’ own celebs, from Nina Hagen and Leigh Bowery to Viktoria Modesta and Game of Thrones’ Esmé Bianco.

TATTOO SUPER MODELS by Christian Saint
(Goliath Books, hardcover £22.99)
Christian Saint is a Brooklyn-based commercial photographer who is also one of the leading lensmen in the tattoo field. And it’s easy to see why, in this beautiful A5 volume, the first of two seasonal photo-book releases from Goliath.
Saint’s elegant and painterly style combined with loving attention to detail and superb use of light produces images that are as much works of art as the ink on his models’ bodies.
He is also in the fortunate position of being able to take his pick of the hottest women from the tattoo scene as his subjects throughout the book’s 144 pages — an approach that thoroughly justifies the book’s title and its inclusion in our last minute Christmas gifts round-up.
(Goliath Books, hardcover £23.99)
For her third photo-book for Goliath, Holly Randall has assembled some 260 shots of girls posing in everything from ‘conventional’ lingerie to pervier garb including latex, leather, corsets, heels, boots. Several also toy with instruments of bondage or discipline.
LA-based Holly has successfully followed in the footsteps of her famous porn-photographer mum Suze, and works for many of the same men’s magazines.
Thus the images here reflect the soft-porn/glamour style that such mainstream mags require, with plenty of bare tops and bottoms (front and back) alongside the clothing worn to reflect the book’s editorial brief. Models include Darenzia, Mosh, Caroline Aquino and several regular Bondage Café girls.
