Dead Lotus Couture 3D print & latex mix dress at Paris show.
A Dead Lotus Couture 3D print and latex combination design was shown in a dress by the London label at the recent 3D Printshow in Paris. It is believed to be the first example of latex clothing being combined with 3D printing.
The Dead Lotus Couture 3D Metrika dress is described as a mix of classic, feminine design and futuristic deconstructivism.
It was inspired by the architecture of the Japanese metabolism movement and, says designer Nange Magro, “intertwines avant-garde structure and surreal dimensions”.
The dress “explores the union between competing antitheses (harmonic/chaos, transparency/opacity, texture/sleek) as a representation of the perfect balance of mortal beauty” adds Nange.
She reveals that 3D printing was used to create the garment’s “chainmaille of 3D-printed modules that move around the neck and slowly disappear into shiny curves and transparent details”.
The neck element of the dress was printed by Ravensbourne lecturer in 3D printing, Rob Elford, and two of his design students, Vinh Vu and Farah Kone, using a Makerbot Replicator 2 printer.
Nange says she’s planning to follow up her initial combination of latex and 3D printing in the Dead Lotus Couture 3D dress with more designs that further explore the potential of this intriguing union.
