“While walking,” he explains, “I came across the Metropol venue and I knew TG needed to happen in this venue. I asked about the venue with the idea of mentioning it to TG, but true to German form, I was unable to get very far. So this idea reached a dead end.
“For two years after that I participated in various discussions and proposals about events happening as collaborations in Berlin, but grew increasingly frustrated that these discussions seemed to just go around in circles.
“Sometimes if you want something to happen you do have to do it yourself. But equally you might not know how to do it, so then the challenge becomes getting involved with people capable of making it happen.”
So he formed a partnership with Berlin designer, event promoter and Hard Rub founder Stevo Spahr, and together they put together a network of other local talents. With those elements in place, he was able to pitch a proposal that piqued TG’s interest.
“Amazingly quite soon into the process of us trying to locate the right venue, we learned that Metropol would be re-opening,” Mark says.
“We were able to get a meeting with them and they said yes, and importantly we were able to negotiate a fair deal for the venue.”
And getting a fair deal in Berlin for an ‘outsider’ event is no small achievement, it seems.
“In Berlin there are issues with how people do business,” Mark explains. “Partly there are issues associated with ‘trust’, so with few exceptions you cannot get access to a venue unless you have an association with it.
“Berliners and Berlin venues are tired of international event promoters turning up and charging €45-plus for a party. This excludes the Berliners. So networking has been essential to overcoming these challenges, which had not been overcome previously by anyone.”
With his dream venue secured, and Torture Garden Berlin now much more than just a concept, what did Mark aim to achieve with the first event?
“We wanted to avoid either replicating or competing or passing judgment in regards to what else is occurring in Berlin. The scene here is rich and diverse and it’s my home for large parts of the year, so I don’t really want to upset my neighbours!
“It is beyond dispute that Torture Garden is the world’s largest and leading fetish club, but this means you cannot behave arrogantly or disrespect other promoters or scenes that exist, or threaten what they are doing.
“For me it is essential for TG not to compromise on its standards and high quality productions. But it’s equally important not only to make this accessible to Berliners but to get them to be a part of it. We want the TG crowd to meet the Berlin crowd but neither to dominate the other.
“I think on the right night TG is the best place to be. It can be incredibly special because it is the people that make it so special. I think it’s the emphasis on the word ‘special’ but it’s difficult to really define without sounding silly or cheesy.”
So what does Mark think it was about his proposal that persuaded Torture Garden HQ to green-light it?
“I would like to think they trusted me, hahaha. They listened and offered me great advice but never said ‘you must do this’ or ‘don’t do that’.
“I guess we know each other and they had a certain confidence in me despite my lack of experience.
“This project is certainly a new challenge for me. My background is in psychiatry and I have held relatively senior management and clinical positions so I guess I must have some transferrable skills.
“The size of this particular project is huge, along with the production costs and potentially the things which could undermine the project. There is no room for complacency. It is a serious business.
“However, I would not, could not and should not entertain embarking on it without my German partner Stevo and Torture Garden. It’s very much a team effort which extends way beyond the usual TG suspects, Stevo and myself.
“There are lots of extremely talented people working on different aspects of the project and there is a huge commitment from the venue staff too! I’m probably the ‘gatekeeper’ which is possibly what I’ve always been in my previous career — I try to contain the madness including my own!”
My final question to both Mark and Charlotte concerns how much discussion there was about the timing of the launch.
The party’s end-of-Feb slot obviously keeps it well away from events like May’s German Fetish Ball Weekend. But it will be a pretty cold time to be going out in latex in Berlin!
“Dates are always tricky,” Mark agrees. “We had to factor many things into the equation including TG’s UK and existing international commitments, while also considering the existing events scheduled in Berlin, which needs to be respected.
“So we went for February. Berlin is an amazing city whenever you visit, but I think people will want a good party after Christmas and while waiting for summer to arrive.
“We want as many TG people as possible from London to join us in Berlin. That would make it feel incredible. I hate the word ‘family’ but it would feel special having so many of the people there that we experience things with in London.”
Charlotte confirms that scene diplomacy was no small consideration in the final choice of date for Torture Garden Berlin’s debut.
“TG always takes care not to tread on toes when we go to a new city. We want the scene to grow, and if we clash with an existing established event then we are making people choose between the two, which doesn’t help the scene and would be a bad business choice for us!
“The international calendar is a lot busier than it used to be, but it’s still possible to be respectful to local events. We want the local community to be happy we’re coming to town, rather than resentful if we were to affect their own parties.
“Also, we’d like to hold two events per year in Berlin, and holding a Feb/March party makes it easier to schedule an early autumn event as well. So that was definitely a factor in the time of year we went for.”
I hope this has been an interesting insight into how things work to ensure a franchised party delivers an authentic TG experience. If you’ve been inspired to attend Torture Garden Berlin, you’ll find, below, all the details confirmed at publication time.
