Wicked Women: Kickstarter for Alejandra Guerrero photo book
Wicked Women, the first fetish monograph from photographer Alejandra Guerrero, is the subject of a Kickstarter funding campaign launched today (Wednesday February 19) by Circa Press.
London-based Circa Press made its impressive fetish publishing debut last year with the release of Steve Diet Goedde’s book Extempore.
As with Wicked Women, Goedde’s book was supported by a crowdfunding campaign — an approach that allows Circa to produce and sell a high quality product at about half the cost of using the book trade’s traditional business model.
Like Goedde, Guerrero — originally from Bogota, Colombia — has strong photographic links with Chicago, where she studied photography at the University of Illinois.
But whereas Steve relocated from Chicago to Los Angeles to develop his photographic career, Alejandra remains based in the mid-west. Shooting trips to LA have, however, produced many of the fine fetish images included in Wicked Women.
The Kickstarter page opens with the photographer talking about what lies behind the work in the book, which represents 12 years of her output and is conceived as the first in a Guerrero series.
“In my photographs,” she says, “I like to portray strong, intelligent women — to explore the spirit of the dominatrix. Through my work I embrace the part of my personality that enjoys teasing and provocation.”
Wicked Women — with an introduction by leading female sexuality writer and commentator Violet Blue — demonstrates very clearly what an important contributor Alejandra Guerrero is to the depiction of women in fetish.
Like Goedde, she has photographed many of the highest-profile and most glamorous US-based fetish models. In the book they are found alongside exotic characters from the professional domination scene.
While her work has appeared in several photo anthologies and numerous magazines, Guerrero’s name might not be quite as well known on the British side of the Atlantic as in the States.
So this book may surprise with the number of classic fetish images she is actually responsible for — images you might easily think were shot by Helmut Newton or someone of similar celebrity.
A selection of work from the book can be found in the gallery below. It should persuade you this project is worth supporting!
Like all Kickstarter campaigns, there is a campaign target — in this case £21,000 to be raised by Friday March 20.
The beauty of the Kickstarter model is that only if this target is reached will the project be funded — and thus guaranteed to deliver the reward that each supporter has pledged funds for. If the target is not reached, your pledge is not ‘cashed in’ and it will cost you nothing.
Pledges start at £10, if you would like to support the Wicked Women project with no reward, just because you believe in it.
To secure a signed copy of this hardcover book, you must pledge a minimum of £50, which (as with all rewards above this level) covers shipping to anywhere in the world, with delivery estimated for June 2020.
Pledges of £90-plus and £150-plus get you a signed book plus signed print(s).
Above this, there are three Boxed Editions containing limited edition, bibliophile collector’s volumes and prints in deluxe clamshell boxes at pledge levels of £250, £375 and £525.
Finally, there are two Wicked Women Patron’s Editions at £1,500 and £2,500, which include signed, limited edition collector’s volumes, and prints including numbered, signed, hand-pulled silver gelatin prints.
