Forget Me Not: Helena Calmfors book Kickstarter fund launches
Forget Me Not by New York photographer and artist Helena Calmfors is a new book project in Circa Press’s growing fetish photography and art series, and is currently subject of a Kickstarter funding campaign to get it published this autumn. We take a look at the campaign (running until April 2), including glimpses inside the covers and a summary of the reward options that are available to those who pledge their support. London publisher Circa Press has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund publication of the next book in its fetish art/photography series: Forget Me Not by Helena Calmfors.
The campaign, which runs until April 2, has already raised more than £9,000 towards it £15,000 goal. So if you like what you see here, get your pledge in and secure a copy as part of one of the eight rewards on offer.
One reward that particularly caught our eye is the Rubber Wrapper Edition, a limited edition of 50 which features a signed copy of Forget Me Not in a rubber wrapper handmade by latex designer Am Statik, an old pal of The Fetishistas. For details of all rewards, see below!
Author Helena Calmfors is a Swedish-born, New York-based artist and performer whose work is inspired by the fetish archetype of the dominant woman. It’s a role with which she identifies and yet “gently subverts by introducing ‘soft’ elements, such as flowers, into the typically ‘hard’ aesthetic vocabulary of domination”.
We promise that it’s just a happy coincidence that the current (March) Fetishistas cover story — our interview with House of Harlot/Fade in Decay director Iris Trika — also features interplay between flowers and fetish. It must be something in the air!
But back to Helena: central to her work, we’re told, is the feminist belief in the right to own one’s body; she also explores the theme of reclaiming identity through hierarchical power play.
The act of creating intimate scenes and experiences is present in all aspects of her art, ranging from performance to watercolour paintings, and both digital and instant photography. She uses Polaroid as a way of “representing the ephemerality of performance and the fleeting intimacy of the dominant/submissive relationship”.
A New York resident since 2014, Helena has had her work included in numerous group exhibitions in the United States, including in 2024: Pride Reflected, Saatchi Art (online exhibit); Dress Up at the Harsh Collective; Love in the Time of Chaos at The Locker Room; and The Other Art Fair, Brooklyn.
Forget Me Not — Helena’s first monograph — will have an introduction by Ankita Mishra, a first-generation Indian-American multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, whose primary interest is in “defining the ways we express identity, in tandem with the ways we struggle to connect with it”.
The hardcover book will have a 25 x 20cm (10 x 8in) format with approximately 80 colour images on 144 pages of fine art paper. The first edition of signed and numbered books will comprise 500 copies plus a special edition with a rubber wrapper. Estimated delivery date is October 2025.
The minimum pledge to secure a first edition copy signed by Helena is £60. Pledge £110 to get two signed copies at a discount. £135 gets you the signed book plus a 10×8 colour print of an image from the book. £160 gets you three copies at a discount.
The Rubber Wrapper limited edition mentioned above can be had for a £250 pledge, while a £285 pledge will secure a signed book plus three 10 x 8 colour prints. £400 gets you a signed book plus a unique original Polaroid by Helena. Finally, pledging £650 will secure a signed book plus a signed original watercolour by the artist.
For anyone who’s not familiar with how Kickstarter works: this project will only be funded — in other words pledges will only be ‘cashed in’ — if it reaches its £15,000 goal by Wednesday April 2 2025 6:50pm BST.
