Nocturna kink + cabaret night makes promising London debut
Hosted by Lady Margo, Nocturna is a new, potentially bi-monthly club and cabaret night aiming to blend the worlds of burlesque performance and fetish into a London event where people can mix, network, chat, play and be entertained. As one of the designers invited to show their wares around the launch venue, EctoMorph’s Krystina Kitsis applauds the host’s efforts to get a new night off the ground in a difficult climate for fetish events. Nocturna, a new London kink-orientated club and cabaret night, made its debut on September 26 in Camden. Organised and hosted by Lady Margo, Nocturna is planned to take place several times a year, with the next event on November 21 — writes Krystina.
Margo sees this as an evolving project, which will be carefully curated by her, drawing on her performer friends and “bridging the worlds of burlesque performance and fetish”.
There is a more relaxed dresscode than at most fetish nights, as you would expect with a cabaret vibe. Opening night guests were sporting a sprinkling of latex alongside sequins, corsets, satin and tailcoats.
Young and mature alike mingled in the more intimate atmosphere created by a club setting all on one level, with tables in front of the stage removed and replaced by play equipment once the performances were over.
The Nocturna performances were excellent, with Swannee Vranckx starting the show segment with the first of two burlesque routines. For the opener, she appeared dressed in a green crystal and feather ensemble — and finished in considerably less.
Elena performs to music from Swan Lake
Swannee’s opening act was followed by circus strongman Aaron Marshall, who displayed his amazing strength through a series of acrobatic poses, and then by Swannee’s second show, which began with her walking among the audience holding a Venetian mask.
Elena Gibson performed a mesmerising combination of pole dancing and classical point ballet to music from Swan Lake.
In between these acts, compere Aidan Sadler entertained us with his camp jokes and excellent renditions of Bowie songs.
Legendary fetish scene figure DJ Rubber Ron took over after the performances to provide his idiosyncratic mix of music for those at Nocturna who wanted to dance or just chat.
Ron kindly reminded me that his first latex garment was an EctoMorph Biker Jacket he purchased from me many years ago. Our worlds have crossed many times since then.
The idea of this Nocturna evening is a social event for people to mix, network, chat, play and be entertained.
Clothing brands showcase their wares
For its debut, several kink-adjacent brands including Maitresse Clothing, Marquis de Mayfair, EctoMorph and Circa Press were situated around the venue to showcase their products — admittedly providing more of a window display than a shopping experience — while the venue’s walls were decorated with photography by Stewart Atkinson.
Most of the clubbers seemed to know each other and thus a relaxed atmosphere prevailed. A few prodommes demonstrated their skills on willing volunteers. It all made for a more intimate and cosy experience than one usually gets.
Following audience feedback, the next event on November 21 promises to have a longer performance segment but an earlier finishing time of 12.30am instead of going on through the night, as the first one did.
Drinks at the Camden venue are at pub prices and a limited food menu is available at reserved tables for those who want it.
My overall feeling about Nocturna: it’s good to see someone prepared to launch a new fetish-related event in these times when the number of venues prepared to accommodate them seems to be shrinking.
