John Willie — the pen name of John Alexander Scott Coutts — is regarded as one of the greatest influences on producers of modern fetish and bondage imagery.
But Willie/Coutts was also a prolific photographer, employing models whom he tied up — generally in lingerie, stockings and heels — both as reference studies for his artwork and for bondage photographs in their own right.
Just before Christmas last year — on December 9, the late artist’s birthday — JB Rund, the world’s leading authority on John Willie, published a massive anthology of Coutts’ photography called Possibilities.
A companion volume of similar size, weight and style to The Adventures of Sweet Gwendoline published 17 years earlier, Possibilities contains more than 1,360 photographs — many never before made public — taken by Willie in Sydney, New York and Los Angeles between 1937 and 1961.
Possibilities is, however, much more than just an exhaustive collection of pictures. It also includes a number of incredibly thoroughly-researched texts that build into what is surely the most complete account available of the artist and the various different situations in which he worked.
At the request of the book’s publisher, we also, back in 2016, synchronised publication of our review of this magnificent tome — which became our December 2016 cover story — with Willie’s birthday.
So with the impending holiday this year in mind, we checked with the publisher that he still has editions of both the trade and deluxe limited editions available — which he does — so that we could flag up the Christmas 2017 gift potential of his magnum opus for overseas customers to order it in good time.
Make no mistake: Possibiliities is not a cheap purchase. The trade edition is priced at $70, with the deluxe edition at $150. And that’s before you include shipping, which adds another $80 for customers outside the USA and Canada.
Unfortunately, heavy books (Possibilities weighs 2.4kg) mean heavy shipping costs. But if you or someone you know admires the work of John Willie and is fascinated by the history of fetish imagery, this really is the ultimate tome to possess.
And incidentally, if you want to go really mad, Bélier still has some copies of the Gwendoline volume left too!
Use the links below to check out our original in-depth review of Possibilities or go straight to the Bélier website where both volumes may be ordered.
