Passive Arts venue fire and owner’s death lead to murder and arson charges

Friday, 30 July 2010

A man has been charged with murder following a fire which broke out on Tuesday morning at famous Los Angeles commercial dungeon and fetish party venue Passive Arts Studios.

Firefighters who attended the blaze at the building, on La Cienaga Boulevard in the city of Lennox, near LAX airport, found a man’s body in the ashes. The body was subsequently identified as that of Passive Arts owner John Lavine.

David Edward Albert, 53, was arrested at the scene by deputies from the LA County Sheriff’s Department after being found hiding in bushes across the road from the fire. Albert, who was bleeding, claimed to have been hit by a car, but the officers didn’t believe him.

Further investigation revealed that Albert was a former employee of Passive Arts who had allegedly been fired from the establishment only a week earlier. He quickly became the prime suspect for the murder of Lavine, who had been shot several times in the head.

Albert, of Simi Valley, was charged on Thursday with murder, arson and animal cruelty, the latter charge arising from the death of the studio owner's dog, which was also found after the fire.

Passive Arts Studios, described as America’s largest, most elegant and best-equipped dungeon, was about to celebrate the first phase of an ambitious expansion programme when the tragedy occurred.

Founded in Hollywood in 1974, it claims to have been the first commercial BDSM establishment in the USA to openly advertise its services. In 2000 it moved to the current 7,000 sq ft warehouse location in Lennox.

As well as offering BDSM sessions and opening its movie set-like interiors to various TV shows, the venue has played host to numerous community events featuring the likes of Midori and Fakir Musafar.

On Saturday nights, the venue has been regularly hosting three popular fetish clubs nights — Time Warp, Club Discipline and The Garden of Heathers.

This Saturday night (July 31), it was due to stage the grand opening of Passive Arts Emporium, “an upscale store featuring the finest furniture and toys available for sale”.

The Emporium was designed as part of a major expansion of Passive Arts following the acquisition of a 4,000 sq ft building next to the existing premises.

When finished, the expanded Passive Arts would have covered more than 11,000 sq ft with parking for over 60 cars, an enclosed patio and more than a dozen themed rooms.

Since Tuesday’s tragedy — the latest in a series that has hit the US BDSM community in recent weeks — the Passive Arts website has been temporarily closed, and the status of its MySpace page, though still online, has been changed from public to private.

Links to both sites and our reports on other recent deaths that have hit the US fetish community can be found below.

Prong’s posture on new site

Friday, 9 July 2010

Prong Jewellery, London’s well-known fetish accessoriser, has unveiled its brand new website.

A far cry from the simple black and white shopping cart, the revamp will greet visitors with what Prong promises is “a sumptuous and seductive site” offering the brand’s full range.

Alongside the new-look web shop, there is also a range of new products, only just added. The new styles consist primarily of a distinctive collection of posture collars in which Gothic Lolita lace trims, buckles and padlocks, and full-on crystal bling are the order of the day.

"Prong jewellery really is the ultimate fetish accessory," says Lady Sedusa, Prong’s owner and head designer. “There is something to go with all the great latex designer labels. House of Harlot and Libidex have used Prong in their photo shoots to show a complete look, and both stores stock a selection of our products too."

Along with Prong Jewellery's own products, Prong is also the only place to shop for Scarlet Diva designs. “Prong teamed up with Marnie of Scarlet Diva some time ago. It's a pleasure to offer our customers the very best in fetish jewellery, and Scarlet Diva is a prized addition to our store," adds Lady Sedusa.

“In fact, within the next week we’re doing another shoot for a new range by Lizzie McQuade. You may not have heard of her yet, but get ready — her styles are already being featured in Vogue, and completely fit the Prong ideal.”

Signing up as a Prong Member earns customers a permanent five percent discount off all styles on the website, as well as benefits from sales and promotions throughout the year.

Photographer Packman dies

Monday, 28 June 2010

The Los Angeles fetish and BDSM community is mourning the death of Ila Packman, an artist and photographer whose work has chronicled the events and parties of the LA scene over the past few years.
Packman was named by the Los Angeles Times as one of the victims of a high profile pair of robbery homicides at medical marijuana dispensaries on Thursday June 25. Packman, 39, was an employee at Hollywood Holistic store in the 1600 block of North El Centro Avenue.
From 2007 to the end of 2009, Packman was a regular photographer at Masque, Club Hell, The Bondage Ball and many other LA events. According to his ModelMayhem profile, he had a love of photography that started at the age of three.
Clearly something of a controversialist, Packman coined the slogan The answer to domestic violence is consensual domestic violence on a range of his own merchandise, sold through cafepress.com.
His business partner, Gaston, may be contacted through his website.

Germany’s capital keeps Whitsun kinky with the first Berlin Fetish Weekend

Tuesday, 11 May 2010

FetishGuerilla and other well-known Berlin fetish organisations are co-hosting the first Berlin Fetish Weekend in the German capital on May 21-23.

Berlin fetish club promoters, venues, stores and designers have teamed up to provide a varied programme of events over the Whitsun weekend — the slot previously occupied by the German Fetish Ball, which has moved to Hamburg.

The aim is to continue to provide a good a reason for fetish people to visit Berlin for a kinky Whit weekend, while keeping costs down to admission prices better suited to Berlin pockets.

Starting out hosting Revolution as a once-yearly preparty for the GFB, FetishGuerilla is now an established part of the Berlin club scene, with regular bi-monthly parties at the legendary KitKat.

After drawing audiences in excess of 1,000 to its last two GFB parties, Revolution on Saturday May 22 at KitKat will be the centrepiece of this year’s schedule. Fetish performers include Plastique in Veins, plus there’s live music from Doomsday Diva and Revolution’s usual mix of hot European DJs. Tickets are €20 on the door.

Friday May 21 sees the BFW kick off at 9pm with Chat Noir, a burlesque evening at Equipage, a “lounge for fetish play and art” located in old stable buildings, known to many as the venue of Darkside Club.

The same evening also offers, from 10pm, an Education Play-themed night at Gargoyle Berlin, a “small but smart” SM club offering three well equipped play areas near Platz der Luftbrücke in the centre of the city.

Saturday 22 starts at 11am with an event at BFW Headquarter Showroom, about which unfortunately we have no information in English.

Saturday’s schedule originally included two three-hour tours by the crfriends-Fetishbus which was to cruise around the city with onboard music and dancing and stop at various fetish shops and clubs. But we’ve now heard that the bus has broken down and won’t be fixed in time, so this element of the programme has unfortunately been cancelled.

Saturday’s clubbing begins at 9pm with Menage à Trois at Equipage, followed at 10pm by the choice of a Corset Party at Gargoyle (featuring outfits by Private Zone Corsets, conveniently situated right next door), or Berlin Fetish Inferno, taking place at Insomnia, another club familiar to many from previous GFB weekends.

Fetish Inferno features DJs Clark Kent and Jumble, kinky performance from DoubleTrouble and a choice of dancing, cocktails, cinema, whirlpool, massage or fun in the SM play areas. Admission prices are as follows: couples €22, men €17 and women €12.

Saturday’s headlining FetishGuerilla Revolution party (details above) starts at KitKat at 11pm.

Sunday 23 starts (optimistically, some may think) at 11am with a fetish brunch organised by crfriends at the Red Rooster bar. Cost per person is €7 for the buffet, plus drinks, and there’s no dresscode.

At 2pm, the legendary Residenz Avalon on the Havel, on the edge of the city, hosts an SM fleamarket and a “relaxed-bizarre chillout by the Havel”.

The Residenz, which has previously hosted GFB play parties, is a listed former Prussian gun factory converted into a BDSM fantasy location rather in the style of the OWK, complete with underground cells, a large 100-capacity event hall, a large, secluded courtyard, and a terrace and landing stage on the waterside.

Admission to the fleamarket is free, providing an excellent opportunity to check out this unique establishment for a potential future pervy holiday.

Closing the weekend party programme on Sunday night is Danse Dangereux — a dance and play night at Equipage starting at 9pm.

Although this first Berlin Fetish Weekend does not include a GFB-style fetish fair, Sunday’s fleamarket at Avalon is by no means the only kinky shopping opportunity offered by this brand new fetish fest.

Most of Berlin’s pervy stores and designers are participating at their own locations, many with extended weekend opening hours and some staging little events on their premises.

Berlin stores and designers taking part this year are: Berli-Gum, BFW Headquarter Showroom, Biank Rodalquilar, Blackstyle, Fantastic Rubber, Hautnah, McHurt, NoNón de Florette, Peitschenhandel, Private Zone Corsets, Rubaddiction, Savage-Store, Schwarze Mode, Schwarzer Reiter, TABEA Design, The Feisty Cat Store, Très Bonjour and XtraX.

We’re not going to tell you which designer is promising free champagne to every weekender who turns up at her showroom in case she regrets her generosity. But you can probably find out by checking the links to the participating stores on the BFW’s website!
